St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle!
The purpose of this second blog entry will be to formally place this blog under the protection and patronage of St. Michael the Archangel. For as long as I can remember I have had a very special devotion to this great saint, the prince of the heavenly hosts.
The name Michael, translates roughly from the Hebrew as, "who is like God". This is frequently taken to mean that St. Michael was so beautiful as to be comparable to God, or that his goodness was so great that he was indeed something like God. This is incorrect. In the ancient Jewish tradition, "Who is like God?", was the challenge that St. Michael issued to Lucifer, when Lucifer declared himself in opposition to the Almighty. Lucifer, a member of the Seraphim, the greatest of all the hosts of angels, was a mighty angel said to have twelve wings when other Seraphim had but six. In the Jewish tradition it was Michael who stood up to Lucifer and led the other loyal angels in battle against the defectors from heaven.
My wife is due in January with our second child and if she delivers a boy we will name him Michael, in honour of the great angel and saint. He may not end up a soldier like his father but if we raise him correctly then by the grace of God he will be a great soldier of Christ.
